The Birchmere ( America's Legendary Music Hall) has been located in Alexandria, Virginia for over 30 years. Since 1989 it has been my privilege and pleasure to create a variety of artwork for this fine establishment: logo design, bumper stickers, T-shirts, tabletents, signage, several murals, the monthly calendar, and even a life-size sculpture of one-time partner / bouncer Pudge.

A lot has changed over the years at the Birchmere. To see some images of murals I painted (along with Sean McDaniel) that no longer exist there, CLICK HERE.

This is the marquee I designed and painted for the club. The 6' x 12' iron stucture that stands 16' tall was fabricated by Flaherty Ironworks. I then cut out, painted, and installed the sheet metal panels. The dobro, burger, and stein are all separate cut-outs.The track letters allow the act names to be changed on a daily basis.

When the club moved two blocks in 1996 the Birchmere became a huge place. Inside one building was a 500 seat music hall, a large dining area with a second stage and dance floor, a 40' long bar , a retail store that sells music and merchandise, a pool hall, foosball, ping-pong, and even a full scale brewery with a tasting room full of antique beer memorabilia. The brewery with its memorabilia and the table games are gone, but the music lives on! All the following murals were painted in acrylics onsite on the walls except the stage backdrop which is acrylic painted on a 10' x 30' canvas.

This is the entrance to the Music Hall along with the street scene mural by the bar. The entire wall is 14' x 65' with a stucco finish. Click on image for details.

This is the stage. The lights, barrels, and equipment are real but the door, brick wall, windows, etc. are acrylic paint on canvas ( 10' x 30'). Click on image for details.

This is the life sized portrait / sculpture of Pudge. Gary wanted me to make a 3-D cartoon character that kind of resembled his long-time friend. I guess I got carried away with the resemble aspect and less so with the cartoon part. The sculpture is a combination of paper mache`, plaster, polystyrene, paint, and thrift store.
